An indentured servant is a person who signs and is bound by indentures to work for another for a specified time especially in return for payment of travel expenses and maintenance. Basically, those who came to America were usually too poor to make a living, so they became servants for others with an understanding that freedom would be achieved later. But how does this compare to slavery?

Compared to Slavery? The key differences between indentured servitude and slavery are very slight; servants with an indenture were usually later given freedom in return, whereas in the slave world, freedom wasn't a prize to be won regularly.
Because of this, indentured servants did not suffer under the same circumstances as slaves. Servants had the incentive of freedom where slaves did not because they were treated as full-time property. The growing economies of the colonies grew dependent on the exploitation of people whether slaves or servants, which later created s higher demand for labor- free labor. Another idea to keep in mind is the terminology "servant" and "slave." At the beginning of colonial history, indentured servants were both white and black. However, as time progressed, the vast majority of slaves were of African origin, while indentured servants originated from countries in Europe, just as the British, the Dutch and the Germans.
